About Dr. Dayal
I have always been captivated by how people draw upon their personal strengths and resources to cope with the challenges of everyday life. I grew up in the midst of my aunt’s struggle with schizoaffective disorder, which affected her ability to engage with people, seek employment, and required unrelenting family support and psychiatric evaluation during crises. Treatment helped reduce symptoms and reestablish a working balance for her and the entire family. My desire to become a physician began during these formative years.

It was during my early clinical encounters with psychiatric patients before medical school which provided me with insight into the beauty and tragedy of the human experience: happiness, sadness, denial, delusions, grandiosity, and the myriad of feelings that drive us. With treatment, some were able to improve, while others remained trapped in the turmoil of their mind. Why were some patients able to improve while others did not? This question continued to intrigue me during my years of training and beyond.

I pursued training at academically renowned institutions, completing a Psychiatry Residency at Duke and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Yale. I have worked in a diverse array of settings over the past 12 years to enhance my breadth of experience. The plight of people suffering with mental illness often involves incorrect diagnoses and treatments, a high burden of medication and side effects, lack of access to treatment, stigma, and more. Without addressing these issues, patients often remain dissatisfied and continue to suffer.
